It’s Important to Keep Tech-Forward Hiring People-Centric
AI is set to transform how we hire and, very frankly, how we live. While the concept can seem scary, we believe it to be a net positive—AI will allow us to work smarter and more efficiently and is geared to make our lives easier.
As technology evolves and advances, it could be easy for artificial intelligence to have too big a hand in some very human decisions. We want to emphasize that people control technology, so knowing how to operate it and keep people-oriented tasks like hiring innately human, in conjunction with technology is entirely on us.
In this newsletter, we’ll discuss how to keep the “human” in HR while taking advantage of all the innovative technological advances coming our way.
Correcting AI Misconceptions
Some of the dialogue and coverage about AI recently could be considered misleading, so we’d like to help set the record straight.
While AI is being positioned as a “new” phenomenon, many of us already use some form of AI in the workplace. According to Oracle’s AI in Human Resources Report, 50% of employees already utilize AI in some capacity, and 88% of businesses worldwide already use AI in some capacity for HR tasks.
While HR, hiring professionals, and those in the business world are excited about the possibilities of AI, job seekers are a bit more skeptical. 72% of job seekers surveyed by Pew Research say they disagree with AI being used to make final hiring decisions, and 41% say they disapprove of AI reviewing job applications. This is where some education is necessary—ensure your applicants that people are making decisions.
An often-used but misleading stat is that humans never read 75% of resumes because algorithms filter them out. When you encounter anti-tech stats like this, it’s important to remember that while tech can filter candidates, humans set the parameters, underscoring the importance of humans knowing how to work with technology.
Embrace AI
Learn about and embrace AI in hiring and the workplace:
AI literacy will keep your business and employees competitive.
AI will help you improve your job listings and strengthen your hiring.
Utilizing tech to make hiring more competitive is a win for any business.
As we reported earlier in this newsletter, many employees are apprehensive that hiring will rely too much on automation and computers. Ease their minds, create a great employee experience, and make the best hiring decisions by:
Telling candidates what to expect: Every candidate should be told by a person—whether over the phone, in-person, via automated text, or email—what to expect at each step of the hiring process. This keeps them engaged, eliminates ambiguity, and boosts your reputation as a people-centric workplace.
Be extra engaging when you interact with candidates: The hiring process is becoming more digitized, so when you do get to personally interact with candidates, be personable, ask questions, and invite questions. Treat these interactions as conversational rather than interrogational (if you’re interviewing them, they’ve already proven themselves in some capacity!).
Ask candidates about their “why”: This is piggybacking off of the last bullet, but it deserves its own. Today’s candidates want jobs that help them find purpose, so ask them what they’re passionate about, what kind of workplace they’re looking for, and their career goals. Asking candidates their “why” adds humanity to hiring and could help you glean some helpful insights.
